Cinematic AI video: how to get footage that looks like film
What makes a shot look cinematic is mostly choices, not equipment: how it is lit, where the camera sits and how slowly it moves. Those choices can all be written into a prompt.
The four things that create a film look
Light
This matters most. “Soft window light from the left”, “golden hour” and “a single practical lamp in a dark room” each give a scene a mood. Without direction, the model tends to choose flat, even light.
Lens
“Anamorphic”, “35mm” and “shallow depth of field” tell the model how the world should be seen. A blurred background instantly looks more expensive.
Camera movement
Slow and motivated beats fast and random. Use a “slow push in”, a “steady tracking shot” or a “locked-off wide”. Choose one move per shot.
Colour
Name a restrained palette, such as “teal and amber” or “muted earth tones”. Limiting the colours is what makes footage feel graded.
A cinematic prompt you can adapt
Night. A woman in a long coat waits under a single streetlight as light rain begins to fall. A car stops in the distance and its headlights go out. Slow push in, anamorphic lens, shallow depth of field, teal and amber palette, distant thunder, low strings.
Keep it believable
- Show fewer people in frame, since crowds are harder to keep convincing.
- Avoid close-ups of hands doing detailed tasks.
- Give each shot a single action.
From a shot to a short film
A single shot is a mood, and a story needs several. Ask for a one- or two-minute video and describe the arc, and the shots are planned for you with a matching look. Read our guide on how to make a short film with AI.
